5.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Kargil

Srinagar, Mar 14 (KB): A 5.2 magnitude earthquake hit Kargil in Ladakh on intervening Thursday and Friday night.

Occuring at a depth of 15 Kms, the seismic activity, as per details available with news agency Kashmir Bulletin, was felt at around 2:50 AM.

There were however no immediate reports of any injury or damage to any property.

Notably, Leh district of Ladakh falls in the seismic Zone-IV (of Damage Risk Zone) as strike-slip fault runs along Zanskar and Ladakh ranges. The high risk seismic zone coupled with the addition of the extreme climatic and geographical condition, makes Leh district all the more vulnerable to natural disasters. (KB)
