New Tunnel Opens Sonamarg for Winter Tourism, Boosts Visitor Numbers
Sonamarg, Feb 4: Sonamarg, a renowned tourist destination situated in Ganderbal district, has witnessed a significant surge in tourist footfall with the onset of New Year. Despite the inclement weather conditions, Sonamarg has remained accessible to visitors- Courtesy: opening of the Sonamarg tunnel which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last month.
The 6.4 km tunnel thrown open for traffic has attracted a large number of visitors eager to explore its natural beauty. According to officials, Sonamarg has experienced a noticeable increase in tourism, with over 56,000 tourists, including domestic and foreign having thronged Sonamarg during January.
This surge in tourist arrivals underscores the growing popularity of Sonamarg as a premier attraction for both local and non-local travellers in Kashmir.
According to the latest figures, 53,676 domestic tourists visited Sonamarg, while 1,114 foreign nationals were also drawn to the area’s scenic beauty. Additionally, 1,220 locals residents of the Valley visited the region, contributing to the total footfall of 56,010.
Local business owners in Sonamarg have expressed their delight at the increase in tourist activity.
Officials said that the opening of the tunnel has not only provided a more convenient travel route but has also contributed to the growth of the local economy by attracting more tourists to the picturesque hill station, officials added.
