Srinagar, Aug 28 (KB): The nomination form of well-known cleric Sarjan Barkati was rejected by election authorities in the run-up to the forthcoming Assembly polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
He is known for his participation in various political and religious movements in the region. “Barkati’s nomination was filed by his daughter, but the returning officer rejected it for reasons that were not yet disclosed,” a person familiar with the matter informed the news agency—Kashmir Bulletin (KB).
Significantly, this development has further intensified the growing tensions surrounding the Assembly elections, with several top political figures facing setbacks in their efforts to contest the polls.
Notably, Barkati was arrested by the State Investigation Agency (SIA) in August 2023. The case pertains to Barkati’s involvement in orchestrating an extensive fund-raising campaign through crowd-funding, resulting in the generation of funds amounting to crores.—(KB)
