Srinagar, 28 Aug (KB): Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief and Former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has criticized the current state of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, stating that it has been reduced to the level of a municipality with no real power to pass laws.

“We have always fought alone. Ever since our party was formed, we have fought alone and with the support of the people. We have fought to remove the sufferings of the people here,” Mufti said while addressing a press conference in Srinagar.

Drawing a comparison between her tenure as Chief Minister and the current situation, Mufti highlighted the reduced power of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly.

“Omar sahab (Omar Abdullah) himself said that he will have to visit the governor for the transfer of a peon. I am not just worrying about the transfer of peons, but I have been such a CM who ran the government with the BJP at the Centre, withdrew FIRs of 12,000 persons, wrote letters to separatists, could get ceasefire implemented, could make leaders meet Hurriyat leaders, can you do it now?, she said.

I was a powerful CM, the Assembly was powerful, now the Assembly has been reduced to a municipality. We cannot pass a law. What will I do with such chief ministership?” she added.

Mufti’s comments reflect the ongoing frustration with the perceived erosion of political authority in Jammu and Kashmir. (KB)
