Kulgam becomes first district to receive brown trout from Denmark

Kulgam has become the first district to receive the much awaited & most popular Rainbow Trout & Brown Trout from Denmark today at Tschanser Trout Hatchery. This was stated by Assistant Director Fisheries Shabir Ahmad Shabir.

He said that Department of Fisheries Kulgam procured genetically improved germplasm of Rainbow trout and Brown Trout from Denmark he added.

While apprising DDC Kulgam Athar Aamir Khan regarding the procurement, AD Fisheries said that the procurement is genetically improved strains of Brown Trout from Denmark and successfully introduced them in Trout Fish Farm Tschanser.

The germplasm will be reared in the hatchery house under controlled conditions and stocked in the freshwater streams of the district and other areas of UT.

District Development Commissioner, on the occasion said that the administration envisages Kulgam becomes pioneering in Trout Angling considering picturesque fresh water streams like Ahrabal stream and Veshow stream & its tributaries.

The stocking of these streams and subsequent sport fishing will make Kulgam a major contributor to eco-tourism he added.

AD said that there was a need to procure the germplasm in order to tackle the genetic depression of the existing rainbow trout.

The officials have been advised to take utmost care for effective management of the germplasm so that pure and viable line of germplasm shall be maintained for further stocking of the streams.
