Soldier killed, Three injured in ongoing Kishtwar encounter

Meer Shabnam

Srinagar, Aug 11 (KB): The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vidhi Kumar Birdi on Sunday said the Kokarnagh Encounter, sparked by credible intelligence about terrorists in the region, continues as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the clash, including the involvement of nearby civilians and the number of militants engaged.

Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing encounter, Birdi, according to the Kashmir Bulletin (KB), outlined the sequence of events leading up to the engagement.

“The operation was initiated based on credible intelligence about terrorists in the area. When the terrorists opened fire on the forces, two soldiers sustained severe injuries and later succumbed to their wounds, achieving martyrdom,” said Birdi, adding that another soldier, who was injured, is currently in stable condition and receiving treatment.

The IGP added that the encounter area, known for its challenging terrain and low civilian traffic, also saw some nearby civilians caught in the crossfire. “One civilian was critically injured and later died, while another remains under medical observation and is reported to be stable,” said IG. “The investigation is focusing on understanding how these civilians ended up in the vicinity of the terrorists,” he added.

When asked about the number of militants involved, Birdi said the precise count would only be available after the operation concludes. Initial assessments suggest that three to four terrorists may be present.

“The operation is ongoing, with authorities working to secure the area and determine the full scope of the incident,” he said.—(KB)
