Zojila Pass Remains Open in February for the first time

Srinagar: The strategic Zojila Pass (11,649 ft), a vital link between Kashmir and Ladakh, has broken all previous records by remaining open even in February. This remarkable feat is the result of the relentless efforts of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under Project Vijayak, alongside the civil administrations of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Officials confirmed that BRO is doing everything possible to ensure the pass remains open, marking a significant shift from a decade ago when it would typically close by November due to heavy snowfall. In 2017, for example, the highway was shut in January and remained inaccessible until May. However, recent technological advancements and dedicated winter maintenance have drastically improved the situation.

Last year, the closure was limited to just one month, highlighting the progress in achieving all-weather connectivity. For the first time in history, the Zojila Pass remains open even in February despite severe winter conditions.

A labourer working with BRO for the past two decades spoke about the challenges of keeping the pass open in extreme weather. “Clearing snow and maintaining the road in sub-zero temperatures and strong wind storms is no easy task, but we are working tirelessly to ensure smooth movement,” he said.

BRO’s Chief Engineer, Chirag Ghura, highlighted the strategic importance of Zojila Pass for both civil administration and defence. “This is the only pass that connects Kashmir Valley to Leh, making it crucial for supplies and military movement. That is why we are striving to keep it open for as long as possible,” he said.

Ghura recalled that in 2015 and 2016, the pass had been closed for over three months due to heavy snowfall. “Last year, the closure was reduced to just one month. This year, we are already in February, and the pass is still open. We are doing our best to maintain this trend,” he added.

He further noted that with the Sonmarg Tunnel now operational, winter closures will become a thing of the past. This will particularly benefit pilgrims heading to Baltal for the Amarnath Yatra, as road blockages will no longer cause disruptions.

Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Kargil, Dr. Mohd Jaffar Akhoon, visited the Zojila Axis to assess the ongoing efforts. Speaking to Rising Kashmir, he praised the dedication of the BRO, Project Vijayak, and local workers for keeping the road operational under such extreme conditions.

“These efforts ensure that the Zojila Pass, which is the lifeline of Ladakh, remains open despite the harsh winter conditions. The road is in excellent condition thanks to the relentless work of the BRO and its teams,” he said.

Dr. Akhoon also interacted with the labourers and acknowledged their resilience. “The LAHDC Kargil is committed to keeping the road open as long as weather conditions allow, ensuring uninterrupted connectivity for both residents and security forces,” he assured. (RK)
