Power Struggle Over Dead Streetlights Leaves Srinagar in the Dark

According to locals, the agency responsible for installing smart meters uprooted existing streetlights during the process but failed to restore them. The agency reportedly shifted responsibility to the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC), claiming it was their job to reinstall the lights. However, SMC, in turn, has passed the buck to the Power Development Department (PDD), which has distanced itself from the issue.
Residents complain that despite repeated appeals, no concrete solution has been provided. “Ever since these smart meters were installed, our streets have remained in complete darkness. We don’t know whom to approach as the departments are shifting responsibility onto each other,” a local from Srinagar’s uptown told the news agency Kashmir News Trust.
The lack of proper street lighting has heightened safety concerns, especially for pedestrians, elderly residents, and women traveling at night. Many alleys and roads, which were well-lit earlier, have now turned into dark spots, increasing the risk of accidents and thefts.
The locals have urged the administration to intervene and resolve the issue at the earliest to restore the lighting system in affected areas. [KNT]
