Nearly 10.5 Lakh Girls Enrolled in Jammu Kashmir Schools, Government Tells Lok Sabha
SRINAGAR: The Government of India has informed the Lok Sabha that a total of 1,050,353 girls are enrolled in schools across Jammu Kashmir for the 2023-24 academic year. This figure includes 508,287 girls in primary and secondary education, with 270,040 enrolled in upper primary, 162,820 in secondary, and 115,202 in higher secondary levels.
The state has witnessed a steady push to increase female enrollment through various interventions under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. These initiatives focus on providing free uniforms, textbooks, self-defence training, scholarships, and improving infrastructure, including the construction of separate toilets for girls. Additionally, the establishment of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) offers residential facilities for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds. lakh
Despite these advancements, the region continues to face challenges in retaining girls in secondary and higher secondary education, with retention rates dropping to 57.1% in secondary education and 34.7 per cent in higher secondary education. Efforts to boost retention and ensure gender-sensitive schooling environments remain central to the government’s broader educational reforms in Jammu and Kashmir.
