Ruhullah Mehdi slams Police for seizing signboard promoting local culture
Accuses Police of silencing Kashmiris voices
Srinagar Feb 22 (KB): MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Saturday condemned the removal of a signboard urging tourists to respect local culture, questioning the Jammu and Kashmir Police’s actions and accusing authorities of suppressing Kashmiris’ rights.
He also said that suppression breeds resentment, and the more Kashmiris are pushed, the stronger their will to resist. “Kashmiris, like any other community, have the right to protect their culture and faith,” he added.
Ruhullah in a post on X wrote, “Even appealing to tourists to respect local sensitivities is now illegal in Kashmir. Will @JmuKmrPolice clarify which law was violated by the signboard? Or is the only law in place the one that silences Kashmiris?”
He said that the colonial LG administration in cahoots with the security forces, has turned Kashmir into a Orwellian nightmare—where people can’t protest, safeguard their identity, or even speak for their culture.
“Suppression breeds resentment. The more you push Kashmiris to the wall, the stronger their will to break it down. Kashmiris like any other society in this country have right to preserve and protect their culture and faith,” he added.
“J&K Police is advised to not work like a colonial power but work and behave as local police guided by law and respectful to the community and its sensitivities,” he added. (KB)
