Mirwaiz Umar Farooq condemns detention, Urges action over Waqf act amendments
Srinagar, Sep 13 (KB): The prominent religious leader and patron of the Mutaheda Majlis-E-Ulema, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, strongly condemned his continued house detention since September 2nd.
Farooq was not allowed to lead the Friday sermon at Jamia Masjid or undertake any other public engagement, which included an important meeting of the MMU along with a media session with a national news channel.
Mirwaiz, in a statement, as per news agency—Kashmir Bulletin (KB), had condemned the government move, which is undemocratic and illegal. He also said that besides the tall claims of normalcy by State officials, there is enforced preventive detention and harassment of political workers and youth in the region.
Farooq said the assembly elections were fast approaching and that long lists were being prepared about who is to be detained, adding “apprehensions are there that those arrested might be charged under stringent laws like the Public Safety Act (PSA) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA)”.
Miwaiz called upon the authorities to abandon these threatening moves and respect rights of the citizens. He even referred to the reported move relating to changes to the Muslim Waqf Act, in which controversy is involved.
“MMU has written a detailed letter to the JPC, wherein objections have been raised and retirement of the amendments has been demanded”. He appealed to the people to remain alert and express their resentment to the online petitioning.
Comrade Yechury was committed to the human and political rights of Jammu and Kashmir.” In a final note, the Mirwaiz paid rich tribute to the communist leader Sitaram Yechury, who breathed his last on Thursday.— (KB)
