Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Expresses Concern Over Engineer Rashid’s Health, Urges Release of Political Prisoners
Srinagar: Prominent Kashmiri religious and political leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has expressed deep concern over media reports regarding the deteriorating health of jailed Member Parliament Engineer Rashid, who has now been shifted to a hospital.
In an X post, the Mirwaiz also highlighted reports that Tihar jail authorities have arbitrarily withdrawn phone call and video meeting (e-mulaqat) facilities for political prisoners under the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Calling this move “very distressing,” he emphasized that the health conditions of several jailed political figures, especially the elderly, remain a growing concern for their families and the people of Kashmir.
“The policy of severity in dealing with Kashmiris is a zero-sum game,” he remarked, urging the Government of India to release all political prisoners, including leaders, lawyers, civil society members, journalists, and youth. He stressed that the government must ensure that the legal rights of the inmates are upheld while they still remain in custody.
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq also reminded the elected government of its commitments, stating that it must honor its manifesto promises and take concrete steps toward the release and relief of these prisoners.
